Why Your Banker Should Be on Speed Dial

October 2, 2026  |  By:  John Wells

Fredericksburg Market President John Wells joined The Building Texas Show to discuss local business and why relationships still matter in banking.

I recently joined Justin McKenzie on The Building Texas Show for a conversation about Fredericksburg, local business and what business owners can gain from a strong community banking relationship.

We covered a lot of ground, but one idea kept coming back to me: business owners need people they know they can call.

Banking has become increasingly transactional. There is always going to be a place for comparing rates, terms and products. But some of the most important conversations I have with business owners start differently.

  • “I have an idea.”
  • “My son wants to start a business.”
  • “I’m thinking about selling part of the company.”
  • “What do you think?”

Those questions rarely come with a simple answer. They come from someone who wants to talk through an opportunity or challenge with somebody who understands their business and the community around it.

Justin and I discussed relationship banking, Fredericksburg’s changing business landscape, entrepreneurship and the opportunities being created for the next generation on The Building Texas Show.

Build Your Circle

A mentor once told me that when you own a business, there are three people you should have on speed dial: your attorney, your CPA and your banker. I’ve always liked that advice.

The best business owners I know understand what they know well and where someone else’s expertise can make them better. A banker who understands your business, its cycles and where you are trying to go can become part of that support structure.

Justin made a point during our conversation that stuck with me. You can look at a bank’s website and see products, rates and services, but some of the most useful opportunities only surface once your banker knows your business.

That deeper understanding can lead to better conversations about cash flow, receivables, payables and how the business operates day to day.

That relationship develops over time. It comes from conversations when things are going well, when they are difficult and sometimes when an idea is still little more than an idea. That is the part of community banking I value most.

A Relationship With the Community

For me, there is another layer to it. Your banker should understand the place where you do business, too.

Fredericksburg has changed a lot since I first moved here. The community has grown, new businesses and young professionals have arrived, and opportunities exist today that were not here years ago. At the same time, there is still a strong sense of identity and work ethic that makes Fredericksburg distinctive.

I see community banking as part of that same ecosystem. To me, it also means putting resources back into the same community where those relationships are built.

When a bank knows the businesses, families and organizations in a community, it has an opportunity to participate beyond individual transactions. That can mean helping a business think through its next move. It can also mean supporting efforts such as the Fredericksburg High School Incubator Program that give young people a reason to imagine building their own future here.

There is something special about walking into a business and knowing the people who work there. I think banking should feel that way, too. That is what being The People You Know means to me.
