The Housing Authority of the City of Brownsville (HACB), Texas Regional Bank (TRB), and The Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) joined community leaders to celebrate the groundbreaking of Buena Vida Supportive Housing, soon to be known as Hope Place.
This 50-unit affordable housing development is being made possible in part by a $1.75 million Affordable Housing Program (AHP) grant from FHLB Dallas, disbursed through its member, TRB.
Located in Brownsville, Texas’ historic Buena Vida neighborhood, the $19.5 million development will serve survivors of domestic violence, dating violence and assault. All units will be reserved for special-needs households and will provide long-term housing paired with services and support to help residents recover and rebuild their lives.
“Buena Vida Supportive Housing is a transformative investment in our community’s future,” HACB’s CEO Carla Mancha said. “This project will not only provide safe, affordable homes, but also empower survivors with the support and resources they need to rebuild their lives. We are deeply grateful to FHLB Dallas and TRB for their partnership and commitment to Brownsville.”
AHP funds are awarded through FHLB Dallas member institutions like TRB and assist FHLB Dallas members in financing the purchase, construction and rehabilitation of owner-occupied, rental or transitional housing and housing for homeless individuals.
“At Texas Regional Bank, we believe that safe, stable housing is the foundation for rebuilding lives,” said Chairman and CEO Michael Scaief. “We’re proud to support the Buena Vida Supportive Housing project, which will provide not only affordable homes but also critical services for women recovering from trauma. It’s an honor to partner with organizations that are making such a meaningful impact in Brownsville.”
Buena Vida Supportive Housing will feature a three-story building with secured entries, gated parking, 24-hour surveillance and indoor/outdoor family spaces. Residents will also benefit from on-site financial literacy programs, youth enrichment activities and support services provided by Friendship of Women Inc.
“We are committed to working hand-in-hand with our members and community partners to address the ongoing challenge of affordable housing,” said Greg Hettrick, senior vice president and director of Community Investment at FHLB Dallas. “Projects like Buena Vida Supportive Housing are especially meaningful because they not only provide safe, stable homes, but also offer a path to healing and empowerment.”
